Virtual Reality - Google Cardboard and Beyond

Bill Silverman, the leader of the BCUG graphics workshop since January 2009, and also a BCUG trustee for the last few years, will be our guest presenter at our July 15th general meeting. During the 2016 programming year for the graphics group, Bill has created three related presentations. In sequence, they are:

  1. Virtual Reality – Google Cardboard and Beyond
  2. Augmented Reality – what is it and applications
  3. Introducing Microsoft Hololens

Each of these is a stand-alone presentation. By special request Bill has been asked to share the first in the series.

The presentation:
Please plan on bringing your smartphone, with the Google Cardboard app installed, and also bring a Google Cardboard unit or similar virtual reality viewer to get the most from Bill’s presentation. One can order a Google Cardboard from the Google store, from a local Barnes and Noble, from Amazon, etc. You can get the Google Cardboard app from the Google app store on your smart phone. Help will be available to install the app and Bill will have a few extra Google cardboard units for you to borrow for the evening’s presentation. If you have any extra Google Cardboard units of your own, please bring them to ensure that we have an adequate supply.

The biography:
After graduating from Brooklyn College, Bill did cancer research at NYU Medical Center for a few months before starting his life long career.

Bill is a retired NYC high school science teacher, holding two licenses, chemistry and physics. In addition to these sciences, over the 34 years of his career, he has also taught biology, ecology, environmental science, astronomy, earth science, SAT math, English as a second language, and a few others.

After retiring in 2001, Bill became a full time student at Brookdale Community College and earned an associate degree in computer graphics, with a straight A average for all course work. He was recommended for and received a National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) scholarship to attend a three day training program in Photoshop in Tampa, FL.

A few years later, Bill attended special classes and intensive training to earn the title of “Master Gardener” under the Monmouth County program. Since his early teenage years Bill has been blessed with a very green thumb. He has been an orchid grower since his early twenties and has been an active member of various orchid societies for over four decades.

Maintaining his beautiful garden, his greenhouse and orchid collection, attending meetings of the Deep Cut Orchid Society, BCUG, and running the graphics workshop, and more keeps Bill a very busy man.

Over the years Bill has been a promoter of his favorite software programs,… Photodex’s Pro Show Gold and the professional level Producer, both for creating amazing slide shows. Bill has been a beta tester for Producer for many years and still is. He has made significant contributions to the development of the software via suggestions for new features.

Bill has given many presentations for the graphics workshop, the BCUG general meetings, for various camera clubs, gardens and orchid societies, and at the Trenton Computer Festival.

Be sure to put this July 15, 2016 special presentation on your calendar. It will be one that you don’t want to miss.
