“Turbo Charge” your PC with Intel P4 Hyper-Threading

By Steve Miller

Intel’s Hyper-Threading (HT) technology provides next-generation performance, in today’s multitasking environment, for your next PC or motherboard purchase.

You may have noticed this year’s 3.4 GHZ “brick wall”, in raw processor speed, that has prevented performance improvements. Hyper-Threading is a groundbreaking innovation that produces performance gains up to 60% for the same clock speed. Pioneered in the Xeon processor for servers, HT technology enhances Pentium 4, to allow execution of 2 threads simultaneously. HT allows Windows XP (and versions of LINUX) to utilize processor resources that would otherwise sit idle. One year from now, Intel intends to extend parallel processing even further with dual core processors that will double performance.

Steve Miller uses Hyper-Threading for video and animation projects in the Multimedia Workshop. Come to the August meeting, and hear Steve describe how you can equally benefit in running background tasks such as virus checking, email encryption, file compression, or audio/graphic/video processing, and yet see little change in responsiveness while you run your favorite foreground applications.

Typical internet-sourced motherboards and prices will be shown for those desiring to upgrade existing PCs. If you plan to purchase a new PC, look for an Intel logo, “P4 with HT Technology”
