Mike Austin Presents PC Speedup and Cleanup

By Sandy Rand

Mike Austin is a professional computer consultant. His company, Spencer Systems, specializes in networking, software, hardware and programming. He has many clients in the medical profession. At one time, he served as a BCUG board member. Over the years he contributed many software programs, training tapes and videos to our club auctions.

Some programs and/or installations create temporary files. They’re supposed to be deleted automatically when the program or installation closes but it doesn’t always happen. Mike will show how to deal with this. As files are created and deleted, fragments of the files tend to be scattered throughout the hard drive. Defrag is the solution to this problem. It’s easy to pick up Spyware. It comes from game sites, gambling sites, illegal file sharing sites and others. Anti-spyware software is needed for this problem. Viruses, worms and Trojans can come from e-mail attachments but also from just clicking on a rogue website or e-mail message. You need up to date antivirus software running at all times.

If you have a computer that’s running poorly and you call a consultant, he’ll show up with his bag of tricks. At our April meeting, Mike will show you his. It includes cleaning up temp files, running Scandisk and Defrag, removing spyware, adware, keystroke loggers, browser hijackers, viruses, worms and trojans.

Come to the meeting where Mike will demonstrate all of the above and also discuss updates and drivers.
