John LeMasney

"More Open Source"

By Doug Powell

John LeMasney, a father, artist, technologist, amateur nutritionist, and open source evangelist working and living in New Jersey, will come back to BCUG to continue spreading the message of Free & Open Source Software (FOSS) and its myriad benefits.

First, we'll look at Apache Friend's XAMPP, a potentially portable Apache, MySQL, PHP easy to install environment with which you can run sophisticated and powerful web applications, like Blogs, Content Management Systems, and more, even if all you have is a USB key as your platform.

Then we'll switch gears to talk about the venerable Open Source graphics triumvirate of the GNU Image Manipulation Program, Inkscape, and Scribus, each a powerhouse in their own respect, but together, simply unstoppable as an image creation, manipulation, and publishing powerhouse suite. Don't miss a moment!

John LeMasney is the Manager of Instructional Technology at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. He is also the Instructional Technology Coordinator for the Center for Innovative Instruction at Rider. Recent projects include mixing Teaching Strategy and Open Source Software through a series of instructional sessions on V isual Metaphor and the GNU Image Manipulation Program, common;y known as GIMP.

John holds an LPI Level one Certification for Linus Administration and was the inaugural Chief Marketing Officer for the Linux User's Group in Princeton (LUG/IP).

Last year there was a large turnout for John's presentation on Open Source Software and, as promised, he will continue with the requests of the members from that meeting.
