Steve Miller

Backing Up Aging Analog Tapes

Steve Miller’s engineering career spanned multiple organizations, starting with AT&T Bell Labs, which morphed into Lucent Bell Labs, which morphed into Avaya Labs.  At Avaya, he was a champion of “componetized” hardware, and software, to be reused by 2000 engineers for numerous product designs (each product utilized a large number of embedded and general purpose processors in many system configurations).  Steve "birthed" Avaya out of the belly of Lucent and created an Avaya research labs from the best of Lucent Bell Labs research.  He created the Avaya future world vision and then led  account teams in selling this vision to the world’s largest business customers.

Since retirement, Steve’s interest in genealogy has him eagerly saving old media for future generations.  His July 18 BCUG  talk will demonstrate his personal techniques in saving/archiving his old photos, audio and video.  Examples of his many projects include creating modern versions of:

     LP records and cassette tapes

     Photos, negatives, and slides

8mm video, VHS, and SVHS tape

Technologies continue to evolve, and require old media be re-digitized every 10 years.  Steve will demonstrate methods of archiving his newest home movies.  He is hopeful his media will eventually be re-purposed for future HD (High Definition), 3D, and even beyond with planned “4K” movies
