Joanne Castellano

"Assistive Technology in Everyday Living"
MEETING DATE: May20, 2011

Joanne Castellano is the Director of TECHConnection, a division of Family Resource Assoc., Inc. of Monmouth County. This is just one of the important services offered to individuals and families who need help using today’s technology in their everyday lives. It is a special place. Located in Shrewsbury , it provides solutions and computer resources for those in need.

Joanne has been the Director since 1990.  She has a background in Computer Programming and became involved with assistive technology upon the birth of her second son who was born with a disability.   Her son, at the age of 6 months, was enrolled in a study using assistive technology with infants with developmental disabilities.  Her son began using a computer in his therapies at 14 months old during his Early Intervention at FRA.   Seeing the benefits of using technology with individuals with disabilities and with FRA’s backing, the TECHConnection was born.

Assistive Technology is for all ages and abilities. Imagine the joy when someone is able to go online and connect with loved ones, or even work on papers and research for school or college. Just because someone is challenged, doesn’t mean they have to be excluded from using technological tools. Things we take for granted, are often unavailable to others without help from agencies like TECHConnection.

Assistive Technology revolves around using alternative keyboards, or mice to make the computer accessible to individuals with physical challenges.  Assistive technology is also special software to help with vision challenges, as well as, various software to assist with the reading and writing process.

BCUG has been a supporter and resource for TECHConnection for many years, and Joanne is going to present a bit of how our User Group helps and maintains the technological part of her work. Many of us are currently volunteering there in some capacity. Computers that are donated have been refurbished or rebuilt for the use of clients. Joanne will also discuss what TECHConnection does in the community, and ways that assistive technology can be helpful.

Joanne is a resource to us, as well, in her ability to define and provide help when needed for members and friends of BCUG. We look forward to meeting her and finding out more about what TECHConnection does.
