Bruce Fowler
Linux Basics --
an Intro to the "Other" O/S
MEETING DATE: May 18, 2012

BCUG member Bruce Fowler.  Bruce will update us as to the latest developments in Linux, an open-source operating system that provides choices and options beyond what is available in proprietary systems such as those marketed by Microsoft and Apple. In this long-awaited presentation, Bruce will explain some of the differences between Linux and other operating systems, look at the basics of installation and use, and review a few of the many applications available. He hopes that you will leave eager to try it on your own computer.

Bruce is retired from Lucent Technologies after a thirty-year career with Bell Laboratories and AT&T, focusing on the architecture of large-scale software systems. His roles ranged from software developer to systems engineer. Technical areas included automated printed circuit board design, development of data base management software, remote management of digital access cross-connect switches, and others. He also contributed over the years to many civic organizations, including the Morristown Zoning Board. and the Rumson/Fair Haven Board of Education. Bruce has been working with computers for almost 50 years and with Linux for about 15. He runs the BCUG Linux Workshop, which is expected to have a spike in attendance after this presentation. He lives with his wife (of 40 years) in Shadow Lake Village and enjoys sailing, hiking, and other outdoor activities in addition to messing with computers. Both of his children are Apple fanatics.

We are happy to have Bruce as our speaker, and anticipate a great turnout and even a few converts before the evening ends.
