Ira Wilsker

Internet Safety and Concerns --
A Cyber Attack Update

MEETING DATE: June 21, 2013
by Jo Grazide

When I first heard of Ira Wilsker as being the ultimate authority on Internet safety and legal concerns online, I thought it was pure hyperbole.  However, after receiving and reading Ira's well-thought-out monthly newsletter, I was convinced.  We are going to be introduced to Ira at our June General Meeting, and I don't think we will come away thinking the same way about the internet.

Ira Wilsker has been active at APCUG and is a part of the Speakers Bureau.  He is available via Webinar, and this one will prove to be interesting, entertaining and almost mandatory for anyone using the internet, email or browsing with or without protection.  Ira will describe the various hazards and caveats, which many of us already know, but things are constantly changing and could be even more dangerous than when we first ventured into cyberspace.

Ira has recently done several presentations on cyber security and cyber war.  Our evening will be on this topic.  Here is a quote from one of his publicity articles:

"Are We Under Cyber Attack?
Ira Wilsker, Associate Professor

The cyber security industry has been well aware that the US has been subject to a sustained cyber-attack for several years.  The general population is blissfully unaware that our entire power of grid, pipeline system, water/sewer systems, air traffic control, and other critical infrastructure have all been compromised by terrorists and foreign powers."

Luckily, we have folks like Ira to educate and support us in feeling a bit more secure.  Ira will describe his work from the perspective of his legal background.  Ira can answer our questions about detection and persecution of offenders such as hackers or ID thieves, or worse.

The advantage of this presentation is that, although a bit more serious than we've been having, Ira will put to bed once and for all some of our misconceptions about downloads or links that appear to be safe and sometimes actually are. Isn't that something we all can relate to?

If you are like most of us and want to learn more about the issues of online safety from an expert's point of view, this presentation is for you.  Everyone, however, will benefit from Ira's contact and there will be plenty of resources he will offer than can continue to assist us.  This is one presentation that will stay with us, if we choose to take advantage.

Ira has an MBA from the University of Maryland.  As an Associate Professor at Lamar Institute of Technology, he teaches business, law, computers, and related fields.

He has served APCUG as an Advisor and Director.  He is the past President (4 terms), past Vice President (2 terms), and past Newsletter Editor (2 terms) of the Golden Triangle PC Club in Beaumont, Texas.  He maintains a blog, several websites, and also contributes actively to APCUG activities.

He has been writing the PERSONAL TECHNOLOGY column every week for over 10 years for the EXAMINER newspaper and has spoken frequently to groups such as ours.

He is also a deputy sheriff, and an arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau, where he has recently been recognized for his service.  He has been the recipient of the Ben and Julie Rogers Community Service Award, the highest award for community service in Southeast Texas, as well as the Dan Bell Community Service Award.

With many credentials and much experience, Ira brings a level of knowledge we will appreciate.  We members are fortunate to have the support that APCUG offers.  The enthusiasm and expertise of our Speakers Bureau members goes beyond what we may get at any other venue, and we are proud to be able to meet Ira, albeit over - cyberspace! We do not miss the irony of that!

Let's come together to be more aware and knowledgeable thanks to Ira's presentation!
