Lee Maxwell "The Joys and Heartaches of Using Linux as an Everyday Computer User" MEETING DATE: April 15, 2016 |
Linux is not Windows and it isn’t Mac OS X [but it’s a cousin to OS X]. Linux is a collection of computer operating systems that share the same common kernel, or software basis, called the Linux kernel. It’s the third consumer level computer operating system, the one that you can download and install for free, the one that rarely comes pre-installed on a computer, the one that includes thousands of free programs ready to download and install, the one that can be very rewarding and difficult to use.
Lee Maxwell will discuss "The Joys and Heartaches of Using Linux as an Everyday Computer User”, focused on his experiences with installing and using various Linux distributions, the wealth of free programs available to Linux users, the fun of trying out new and different Linux distributions and desktop environments [and explaining what a desktop environment is], the utility of using Linux and Linux programs to troubleshoot problems with Windows PCs and Macs, the hassles of troubleshoot bugs and other problems in Linux distros and software, the frustration of finding good tech support for Linux problems, the steep learning curve for learning how Linux really works, and as much more as can be crammed into a one-hour presentation, while answering questions.
Lee has been a BCUG member for many years, is the co-leader of the MacWaves and Linux Users Group workshops, and is the editor of BCUG Bytes. He also is a self-employed computer consultant and troubleshooter, specializing in troubleshooting Macintosh computers but also solving problems on Windows PCs and PCs running Linux, as well as computer graphics, networks and more. He is an occasional bicyclist and has lived in Asbury Park for 14 years.
